Pull Every Line from a 1040 Without Re-Keying

During tax season, a CPA reviewing client returns needs to pull filing status, all income lines, adjustments, deductions, credits, payments, and refund or amount owed from every 1040 that comes in. This tool reads a Form 1040 (including 1040-SR and 1040-NR) and extracts all of those fields into a structured table. It detects attached schedules (A through SE) and notes which ones are present. The tool requires a text-based PDF. IRS transcripts and e-filed returns work well. Photocopied paper returns should be run through the Scanned PDF to Text tool first.

The tool runs 7 arithmetic verification checks: total income, AGI calculation, taxable income, total tax, total payments, refund or amount owed, and self-employment tax. It flags 10 common IRS audit red flags, including unusually high deductions relative to income and Schedule C losses in consecutive years. Enrolled agents and CPAs reviewing prior-year returns use this to capture the numbers without re-reading a 15-page return line by line. Loan officers at banks and credit unions use it to verify income for mortgage or SBA loan underwriting, where they need AGI, W-2 income, and Schedule C/E income from the return.

Reviewing a 1040 with Schedules A, C, and E and summarizing the key figures takes 20 to 40 minutes for a thorough read-through. Extracting every line into a spreadsheet for comparison against prior years takes longer. This tool gives you the structured data in seconds. SSNs are automatically masked to show only the last 4 digits before the data reaches the extraction model.

Common use cases

  • Client return review: extract prior-year 1040 data to compare against current-year numbers during tax prep
  • Loan underwriting: pull AGI, W-2 income, and business income from 2 years of returns for mortgage qualification
  • IRS audit preparation: generate a structured breakdown of every line to identify potential audit triggers before filing

The workspace version handles the full filing season. Create a free Eudoxic workspace to upload all returns and compare extracted data side by side.
